While almost half of those polled indicated some support for a presidential run by Clinton, only 16 per cent said they would definitely vote for her.

Clinton, who is seeking a second, six-year term in the US Senate this year, has not said if she will seek the Democratic Party nomination for president in 2008.

Forty-nine per cent of New York voters in the Marist poll said Clinton should not run for president, while 41 per cent said she should.

While 59 per cent said they expect Clinton to run for president, 62 per cent said it is unlikely she could win.

Conversely, 53 per cent said Republican Rudolph Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, should run for president in 2008, while 41 per cent said he should not do so.
