It didn’t take long after Google’s semi-successful stand against the government’s attempts to obtain information on peoples’ search habits for the subpoenas to continue flying beyond the Big Three operators that include Yahoo! and MSN.
The US Justice Department is now extending its enforcement of the controversial child protection law by demanding internal files from more technology companies that include ISPs, cable operators, security companies and more. Information Week uncovered the subpoenas through the Freedom of Information Act requests, although there are no reports as to which companies are complying. There are also no formal reports on the quiet grumbling of said tech firms in how much lost time they have to undergo for the countless hours of lost productivity in order to obtain the demanded documents, many wishing for other obvious alternatives like giving away better software to parents for monitoring their children’s Internet habits. This would be a good idea if you considered how Daddy could now blame Junior if Mommy catches him though software logs of searches for some alien scatological sex fetish. Critics cite how this almost blanket pseudosolution will merely be a blip in the effects to the efforts of the increasingly savvy perpetrators who could simply base their operations offshore, while giving undue work on the companies involved and paranoia of perverts everywhere. Pee Wee Herman and Michael Jackson were unavailable for comment.
