The no. 1-rated chessboxing contender in the United States is not your ordinary athlete. He’s got brains to boast of.
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register reports that apart from growing up with a love for sports, the Ohio County native picked the brains of everyone in the know. David Depto, who has numerous trophies and plaques as proof of his strong scholastic skills, looked at pedagogic contests as sporting events.
But he wanted to prove to people that he's got more to him than his innate academic prowess. Thus, Depto immersed himself in football, baseball, wrestling, and boxing, and went on to become a two-time holder of “the toughest man in the Ohio Valley” title.
After seeing ESPN’s SportsCenter feature on chessboxing, Depto found a venue to finally prove that he’s not only all brains. He’s got brawns, too.
